Board approves two administrator hires; district announces donations and upcoming dates

The Tempe Elementary School District governing board approved, as part of the consent agenda March 5, the appointment of Jennifer Giordano as principal at Nevitt Elementary and Steven Carbajal as director of safety and security.
A district spokesperson summarized Giordano's background to the board: she earned a bachelor of science and a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in elementary education and two additional master’s degrees from Grand Canyon University in reading and educational leadership. The district said Giordano has served the Tempe district for 19 years in roles including classroom teacher, literacy coach, professional development specialist, teacher on special assignment and assistant principal at Nevitt for the past five years. Giordano addressed the board and said she is honored to continue serving the Tempe community.
The board also approved Steven Carbajal to serve as director of safety and security. The district said Carbajal is a graduate of Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, grew up attending Tempe schools, and has 27 years of experience in law enforcement with the Tempe Police Department. Carbajal told the board he is humbled by the appointment and pledged to work to ensure students’ safety while allowing them to benefit from security measures without being negatively impacted.
During the meeting district leaders also announced community donations: a Rack Room for Shoes donation to Moseley Middle School valued at more than $1,900; a $1,500 donation from John Bruske to Chamblee School; new vision screening kits donated by the Arizona Department of Health Services sensory screening program (valued at $1,108); and a donation from the Thai Foundation and Toyota of $599,276. These donation amounts were presented verbally during the meeting.
The consent agenda, which included these personnel approvals, was moved and approved by voice vote; the meeting record does not identify the individual mover or seconder by name. Announcements at the end of the meeting included parent-teacher conferences March 4–6, spring break March 10–21, and the next regularly scheduled governing board meeting on April 2, 2025, at 7 p.m. in the Karen Arredondo Governing Room of the Sanchez Administration Building.
