The committee’s action followed a presentation by Lee Tillery, parks and recreation director, who said the 2025 list is largely the same as 2024’s but notes a few name changes: “Art in the Park” in 2024 is listed as “Day in the Park” for 2025 in coordination with the High Point Arts Council, and the International Food Festival is listed as “Savor High Point” for 2025.
Committee members asked staff to confirm responsible sponsors and to add or correct listings. Council Member Patrick Harmon said he serves on the Friends of John Coltrane board and asked to be recused from votes involving that festival; he also said he is part of the planning committee for the Unity Festival and requested recusal on that item.
Monica Peters moved to proceed with the updates Harmon and Councilman Tyrone Johnson raised and to approve the remainder of the list with those adjustments; Councilman Tyrone Johnson seconded. The clerk recorded Harmon’s recusal for the John Coltrane and Unity festivals. The committee voted in favor; three members voted aye and the motion passed. The committee then separately moved to approve the remaining events and that motion also passed.
Committee members discussed one event that did not appear on the draft list: the Carl Chavis YMCA Juneteenth festival. Staff said they would check whether an application or request had been submitted and, if appropriate, include it on the list and finalize sponsorship details. The city attorney and staff noted that if an event ultimately did not require city services or road closures it could remain listed without further action or be removed later based on staff findings.
The approved packet will be updated with corrected sponsor names for the John Coltrane and Unity events, and staff was directed to confirm the status of the Carl Chavis YMCA Juneteenth event and report back. The clerk will record recusals in the meeting minutes.
