The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners on March 5 approved proclamations recognizing March 2025 as Women’s History Month and March 2025 as American Red Cross Month, and formally recognized the county public health director for a national award.
The board unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing Women’s History Month; Vice Chairwoman Jones read the proclamation and praised county women serving in leadership and the county workforce. Commissioners also unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing March as American Red Cross Month and invited Mr. Harris of the Sand Hills chapter to comment; he described local Red Cross work including blood drives, smoke‑alarm installs and military family support.
Earlier in the meeting the commissioners recognized Cumberland County Public Health Director Dr. Jennifer Greene for receiving the American Medical Association’s Outstanding Government Service award for career public service, presented Feb. 11 at the AMA’s advocacy conference in Washington, D.C. Dr. Greene thanked the board and county staff and said the award offered an opportunity to “tell our story for public health.” Commissioner Adams described the AMA selection as unanimous and noted a standing ovation in the awards room.
Why it matters: The proclamations are ceremonial recognitions the county uses to highlight community partners and observances; the public recognition calls attention to local public‑health leadership and to nonprofit relief efforts that support disaster response and blood donation.
Votes: Both proclamations were approved by unanimous voice votes at the meeting.
