Vacaville staff report dog-park opening and several park improvement projects set to start this spring

Park planner Nemo Gonzalez told the Park and Recreation Commission on March 5 that several park capital and improvement projects are moving from planning to construction this spring.
Gonzalez reported that the dog-park improvements at Lagoon Valley Park are officially open, and public works recently completed replacement of a small bridge across the dam, restoring access to the loop around the lagoon. He said scout projects, including an Eagle Scout trail-marker project by Mason Hoskins, are scheduled for work this month.
On Trower Park, Gonzalez said the contractor bid was awarded at the prior City Council meeting and that staff held a pre-construction meeting. He said the contractor will provide a construction schedule later in March and that work is expected to begin in April or May. “They’re scheduled to work on it for about 60 days, and then there’s a maintenance period afterwards,” Gonzalez said. He added that only parts of the park under active improvement will be fenced off and that other park areas should remain available to the public.
Gonzalez also said the art component for Trower will be released via a forthcoming request for proposals to commission an artist for the project.
Regarding Alamo Creek Park, Gonzalez said bids were received and a low bidder came in near the department’s original estimate; he said the contract will be considered and awarded at an upcoming City Council meeting. Planned Alamo Creek improvements described by staff include replacement and stabilization of decomposed granite pathways, demolition of a small basketball area and installation of a larger elementary-school-sized court, addition of game tables (for example, ping-pong), and replacement of site furnishings and fencing.
Gonzalez closed the update noting the department’s ongoing work to sequence construction while keeping portions of parks accessible during improvements.
No formal council action on these projects was taken by the commission at this meeting; staff said the Alamo Creek contract is pending council award.
