Truckee High showcases new Carnegie math rollout and equity gaps in fall term data

Truckee High School administrators and teachers told the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District board on March 5 that the school’s first term using the Carnegie math curriculum produced improved overall proficiency but persistent disparities for Hispanic students.
Principal John Neuberger opened the presentation and introduced Scott Delgado, the school’s college and career readiness counselor, who reviewed fall-term enrollment and proficiency figures. Delgado said 65 students took the new Introduction to Integrated Math course and “72.31 percent of the students showed proficiency in term 1 and then 55.38 in term 2.” He added: “85.71 percent of our students who received a D or an F in term 2 were Hispanic students, which is roughly, 12% above the population of the class.”
The presentation covered Integrated Math 1, 2 and 3. Delgado said 103 students took Integrated Math 1 (about 36% Hispanic) with 82% proficiency in term 1 and roughly 71% in term 2; he reported that “80 percent of the students who received a D or an F in term 2 were Hispanic.” For Integrated Math 2 (116 students, about 29% Hispanic), Delgado reported 87% term‑1 proficiency and 75% term‑2 proficiency, and that Hispanic students “represented” a substantially larger share of the D/F grades than their share of enrollment.
Neuberger and teachers framed these figures as mixed: overall class-level performance rose after adopting Carnegie, but the school must still close an achievement gap. Neuberger said the staff has created a math pathway to show families how students can still reach college‑preparatory coursework even under the district’s block schedule and noted changes to A‑G requirements that will increase demand for Math 3.
Teacher Jody Burrell demonstrated Mathia, the Carnegie online platform, and described features staff say are helping students and teachers diagnose learning needs in real time. Burrell said teachers can see item‑level reports as students work, identify who needs help and “lock the browser so they can’t navigate out” during assessments. She noted an accessibility feature: “The curriculum is all available in Spanish with the click of a button,” and described concept‑builder modules and AI‑generated problem variants that adjust practice to each student’s needs.
Staff told the board the school will add bilingual and special education sections of Carnegie, offer new electives such as business math and personal finance, and continue to refine criteria for placing students in advanced freshman math so acceleration does not undercut student readiness or mental health.
District leaders and board members praised the use of diagnostic data and bilingual supports but emphasized the need to translate diagnostic insights into targeted interventions for students who are underperforming. The district plans to continue monitoring outcomes and to return to the board with additional data.
Ending: Truckee High staff said they will continue using Carnegie/Mathia tools this spring while expanding supports (bilingual instruction, special‑education sections and counseling), and the board will receive further updates as new term data are available.
