Douglas County schedules appraiser sessions, joint meeting with Eudora; commissioners discuss letter on Haskell and farm impacts

During discussion of a draft letter addressing recent termination actions affecting Haskell, commissioners asked staff to finalize language and circulate a near-final draft for review before sending. Commissioner Willie asked that the letter include a paragraph addressing farm impacts and potential risks to farmers who participated in conservation contracts, saying those farmers had invested their own funds and worried about reimbursement. Willie also asked that the letter reference support for KU Innovation Park research, noting Senator Jerry Moran’s prior advocacy.
Commissioner Reed and other commissioners requested a final review of the letter before it is sent; staff said they hoped to transmit the letter next week. Commissioners praised the tone and language of the draft and asked that any additional suggested language be sent to staff for incorporation.
In other miscellaneous items, staff announced a vacancy in the Palmyra Township trustee position; Commissioner Anderson said he would work with staff to solicit applicants and bring a recommendation back to the commission. Separately, commissioners noted a Haskell group public meeting at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Haskell Auditorium to update members of the public on the termination situation referenced in the letter discussion.
Staff also reminded commissioners of a work session next week on the county’s self-help center. No formal votes were taken on these miscellaneous items during the meeting.
