At the March 5, 2025, meeting of the Cottonwood Heights City Planning Commission, resident Nick Yancey urged commissioners to consider the specific character of the Canyon Center area when the city develops short-term rental regulations.
"It would be wonderful if we could take into account, some of the character of that area," Yancey said. He described his home as located near the mouth of the canyon in a mixed area of commercial and residential uses, noting nearby hotels, restaurants and a condominium project are part of the local context.
Yancey said his neighborhood includes a grandfathered cluster of short-term rentals north of his property and that some existing local developments have two-car garages and designated on-street parking to accommodate trash collection and other needs. He said he and his wife rent the home at times and want to comply with Cottonwood Heights rules, but that the current regulations present challenges because the property sits on a city street where short-term rentals are not currently allowed. "We would like to play by the rules," he said.
Yancey requested that planners take the immediate area's mixed use, parking availability and existing grandfathered rentals into account while drafting any new short-term rental regulations. The commission did not take action on short-term rental policy at the March 5 meeting; Yancey's remarks were made during the general public comment period.
