Lake County discussion centers on grooming plan, equipment costs and funding for Mineral Belt Trail

Jane (Parks and Recreation staff member) presented a yearlong review of cross‑country grooming operations in Lake County on Monday, outlining equipment inventories, costs and the county’s use of the Nordic Pulse mapping platform to coordinate volunteers, Colorado Mountain College students and county crews.

The discussion matters because grooming affects visitor experience and local winter tourism revenue, volunteer and county staff resources, and safety on multiuse trails. Commissioners, municipal staff, volunteers from Cloud City Wheelers and High Rider Sumo Club, private operators and other users debated equipment replacement costs, volunteer capacity, whether the county should concentrate effort on the Mineral Belt Trail or the Mount Massive Golf Course, and possible revenue sources to sustain more-consistent grooming.

Jane summarized how the county and partners convened multiple grooming meetings in 2024 to define minimum grooming conditions, build an equipment inventory and explore fundraising and platform options.
