Council approves city-run operations and short-term funding for Redding Sports Park; seeks private partnerships

Redding — The Redding City Council voted 4–1 to continue city-run operations of the Redding Sports Park and to approve short-term funding that allows staff to keep the facility open while pursuing private partnerships, sponsorships and grant opportunities.

City staff presented a conservative “worst-case” operating model that assumed no new sponsors or programming and projected an operating subsidy in the coming fiscal year. Staff estimated the park would require roughly $118,000 to complete the current fiscal year and a larger annualized operating budget of roughly $965,000 for the next full budget year, with anticipated revenues substantially below that total in the early months as programming and concessions scale up. Recreation staff stressed many revenue streams are untapped — including sponsorships, concessions/food and beverage, expanded programming and grants — and recommended the city continue operations while actively pursuing partners.
