HCDA reports Kolawalu Dog Park opening, staff cite vandalism and punch-list work

Hawaiʻi Community Development Authority Executive Director Craig Nakamoto on March 5 reported that Kolawalu Dog Park opened after a Feb. 8 blessing, but staff are continuing punch-list work and monitoring vandalism at the site.
"We had held the blessing for the Kolawalu Dog Park and the other improvements," Nakamoto said, noting HCDA staff and board members attended the opening. He said staff are asking the contractor to correct remaining items and are adjusting irrigation and grass maintenance schedules.
Nakamoto told the board HCDA has experienced "some events of vandalism to the park" and that he had notified the police department and the district commander to be aware of the incidents. He characterized the park as "well used" and said staff have received positive feedback from the community.
Chair Sterling Higa and Secretary Lidstone were among officials who attended the opening. Higa thanked staff: "Great job to the staff on the park," he said; the board also expressed appreciation for the contractor's work and community interest.
No formal board action was taken on the report. Nakamoto directed staff to continue corrective work and monitoring, and the board offered congratulations to staff and partners for the park's opening while noting the need to address vandalism and maintenance issues.
The meeting adjourned at 11:17 a.m.; the board planned to reconvene at 11:30 a.m.
