Council approves CAPRA grant proposals focused on renourishment, monitoring and bayside erosion control

The City Council authorized staff to proceed with preparing CAPRA (Coastal Erosion Planning and Response Act) grant proposals that would seek funding for three priorities: continued beach renourishment, expanded beach and dune monitoring (including more frequent surveys and potential LIDAR usage), and bayside erosion control at selected street endings on the north side of the island.
Shoreline Director Christina Baburka reported the Shoreline Task Force recommended those three project categories. She said CAPRA funding cycles have substantial allocations (staff noted the program annually distributes roughly $40 million statewide) and that final grant proposals must be submitted by May 1; staff will return to council in April to present the completed applications for council approval prior to submission.
Council voted to direct staff to prepare the applications. The approved list will allow staff to devote the next month to drafting grant narratives and budgets and to seek any interagency or consultant support needed.
