IDC approves $25,000 for Coastal Windstorm Insurance Coalition; coalition urges state action on rates and mitigation

The Industrial Development Corporation on March 4 unanimously approved a $25,000 payment to renew participation in the Coastal Windstorm Insurance Coalition, a local advocacy and lobbying group that works on state-level windstorm insurance policy.

Caroline (coalition representative) and Henry (longtime advocate) briefed the board on recent activity at the Texas capitol, including a decision by the state insurance commissioner that the coalition hailed as limiting a proposed 10% rate increase. Coalition representatives urged continued education of lawmakers and residents about how non-admitted carriers and reinsurance costs affect premiums for island homeowners.
