Town prepares for three council vacancies; declarations due in June

Town staff told the Interlaken Town Council that three council seats will become open at the end of the calendar year.
The council was told that one councilmember appointed in December 2023 served only to fill an earlier vacancy and therefore must stand for election at the same cycle as the previously vacated seat. Staff said that the other two seats held by Greg and Sue also expire at the end of the year, creating three openings. The deadline to declare candidacy is in June.
Staff described the procedure if no candidates declare by the deadline: declarations would remain open for write-in candidates; if no one files or writes in a candidate, the seats become vacancies on Jan. 1 and the mayor, with council approval, would appoint temporary replacements. Staff noted uncertainty about one step in the worst-case scenario related to appointing the mayor should that position also be vacant.
Councilmembers were asked to encourage interested residents to contact the town. No formal election procedures were changed at the meeting.
