Interlaken Town Council members discussed a request from Midway Sanitation District to construct a temporary access path to reach a main sewer line that runs beneath Burne Drive and Interlaken Drive.
The council heard that Midway Sanitation District manager Becky Wood requested the work to enable equipment access and maintenance of a sewer main between the two roads. A town staff member said the route would cross town-owned land and portions of private property where the district holds a recorded easement, and that the district proposed an ATV- or small four-wheel access path to deliver equipment and materials.
Council members asked the district to provide formal plans showing the exact route, the equipment they intend to use and notifications to affected property owners. “They will submit flyers, door tags, every, you know, to all the lot owners that would be affected by this,” the staff member said. Council members repeatedly urged minimizing disturbance: one member said the path should be “maybe ATV sized, you know, not a full size truck or even a side by side” and asked that any access be temporary and removable.
Members discussed slope and safety concerns for the steep hillside where the line runs, and agreed the town’s authority is limited to town-owned property; work on private lots would be governed by the recorded easement. A councilmember said the town would ask for a plan that shows equipment types and locations where the district might “daylight” the line for repairs.
Timing was raised: the district indicated the work must occur after the ground dries out, and a staff member said the council preferred earlier in the summer rather than during drier, higher-fire-risk months. Councilmembers said they would ask Midway Sanitation for detailed plans and a proposed schedule and report back at the next meeting.
No formal vote or permission was recorded at the meeting; the council agreed to continue discussions and to request the district’s plans and notifications to property owners.
