Delmarva Shorebirds general manager Chris Bitters reported to the Wicomico County Council in the March 4 open-session that the ballclub’s community programs continue to expand, with ticket-donation programs and youth literacy and hunger-relief initiatives among the highlights.
Bitters summarized the team’s community fund (established in 2009) that channels donations to local youth sports and other nonprofits; programs cited in the council packet include Hit the Books (reading incentive that donated thousands of tickets to students), Strike Out Hunger (Sunday canned-food drives and donations to Maryland Food Bank), Silver Sluggers (discounted season packages for seniors), and a roster of jersey-auction charity nights that raise money for local causes.
Bitters also said the team partners with local organizations for health clinics, veteran assistance programs and youth camps. He noted that the stadium renovation project (addressed elsewhere on the agenda) includes scope that replaces gas-fired equipment in part to meet grant terms and that the team’s outreach has included substantial ticket donations and community partnerships.
Ending: The Delmarva Shorebirds asked the council to consider the team a continuing community partner; the team will proceed with its planned community season as spring training concludes.
