The Olympia City Council adopted the consent calendar on March 4, which included approval of the proposed 2025 Youth Council work plan. Susan Grissom, assistant to the city manager and liaison to the youth council, presented the plan in detail.
Grissom said the youth council, first formed in 2022, will engage this year on chapters of the Olympia 2045 comprehensive plan as staff briefings become available. The youth council's goals include providing written feedback on plan chapters, learning about city housing and homelessness responses, and working with transit staff on issues such as youth bus use.
Other elements of the youth council work plan described by Grissom include recruitment planning (terms run September to August), a youth-run city Instagram presence, creation of a public-service announcement tied to overdose awareness, and coordination with the Lacey Youth Council for a potential joint meeting and a 2026 youth summit.
Council members praised the work plan as a milestone for youth civic engagement. Mayor Pro Tem Nguyen and others noted staff briefings had been "invigorating" for city staff and that the council should expect iterative adjustments to the work plan as the new body develops. The consent calendar containing the work plan was approved by voice vote; the meeting record shows the consent calendar was adopted but does not record separate roll-call tallies for each consent item.
