Wellington schedules Earth & Arbor Day events, board rearranges agenda to hear details

The village of Wellington will hold its Earth and Arbor Day event on Saturday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wellington Amphitheater, village staff told the Tree Board.
Marcus Lockhart, community event specialist for the Village of Wellington, told the board the event will “feature earth friendly vendors, activities, and a raffle drawing for a fire bush,” and that volunteers for the Great American Cleanup will leave the amphitheater at 9:30 a.m. and return about 10:30 a.m. He asked the board to host youth activities such as seed planting and to share vendor contacts with village staff.
Lockhart said garden-club plant awards and a ceremonial tree planting with council and Smokey the Bear are scheduled, and that Will, the superintendent of the village landscaping division, is planning a sweet bay magnolia for the planting.
The Tree Board voted to move the Earth and Arbor Day agenda item ahead of staff updates so members could discuss it. The board’s motion to change the order of the agenda was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Board members raised several event-related suggestions: locating the Tree Board’s booth near the landscaping superintendent’s tent, including water-conservation information or a Public Works/Water Department presence, and inviting renewable-energy vendors (Marcus Lockhart said he had reached out to contacts at Florida Power & Light/NextEra-related staff). Marcus Lockhart also said the Wellington Garden Club will hold a plant sale that morning.
Lockhart encouraged board volunteers to staff the children’s seed-planting activities; he identified Gus Ponce as the volunteer coordinator.
The village will provide seedlings and giveaway plants at the event; Lockhart listed seedlings the village planned to give away including pond cypress, red maple liners and dune sunflower seeds. He said the children’s planting activity in prior years used wildflower seeds and that this year the village is planning edible seeds such as tomato, lettuce and basil for youth planting.
The board asked staff to seek water-conservation pamphlets for the public and to continue coordinating with the Garden Club and Master Gardeners on educational materials and vendor outreach.
Looking ahead, Tree Board members said they expect to help staff the seed-planting and other youth activities during the event.
Ending: Staff will return to the Tree Board with final event details and vendor confirmations closer to the April date. Marcus Lockhart said volunteers and vendor suggestions should be routed to the village volunteer coordinator, Gus Ponce.
