The Health Committee voted to pass House Bill 330, which changes the state's definition of “lead free” to match the federal government’s definition so state grant applications read verbatim with federal requirements.
Supporters said the change is technical but necessary to secure federal grants. "It just changes that definition," Representative Wood said during the committee presentation.
The bill sponsor said the change is intended to remove a barrier when the state applies for federal funding tied to the federal definition of lead-free materials. A committee member noted the state likely will receive substantial federal funds as a result.
A motion to report the bill favorably was made by Representative Paul and seconded by Representative Brinyard. The committee took a voice vote; the bill passed.
The measure makes no substantive programmatic changes to existing lead-abatement policy in committee discussion; it solely aligns statutory definitions for grant compatibility.
