The City Council voted on March 4 to reclassify the existing administrative office clerk position to a newly created staff assistant classification and to appoint the current incumbent to the new position.
Interim Assistant to the City Manager John Tang presented the item, saying the office clerk already performs duties consistent with a staff assistant and that the reclassification formalizes those responsibilities, including deputy city clerk duties in the city clerk’s absence, records management and agenda preparation. Tang told council the change includes a new job classification and an updated job description reflecting the expanded scope.
Tang said the fiscal impact would be limited: his position had been vacant, creating salary savings that would offset the change; the net additional cost from March through June was estimated at $4,417. He provided monthly salary comparisons indicating the staff assistant classification is higher than the current office-clerk pay, and council members asked about ongoing annual cost differences.
A motion to approve the reclassification passed on a voice vote with no opposition. Council directed staff to implement the classification change and to proceed with appointment of the current incumbent to the staff assistant position.
