Navasota, Texas — Grimes County commissioners’ court proclaimed March 8 through May 2, 2025, as an eight-week Walk Across Texas program and set a public kickoff for 9:30 a.m. March 8 at the Navasota Center, 101 Stadium Drive, according to county and extension staff.
Andrea Ryan, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension family, community health and 4‑H agent, introduced the program and the county’s Walk Across Texas proclamation to the court and audience. Ryan said the program is "a fun team based physical activity program" and explained local logistics, including team formation and sign-up sheets she brought to the meeting.
The nut graf: the Walk Across Texas program is an eight-week, team-based activity intended to increase regular physical activity among adults and youth by combining friendly competition with group support. Organizers urged county residents to form teams and attend the March 8 kickoff.
Ryan told the court teams may include up to eight members and said the program encourages participants to share mileage among teammates. She said individuals can walk up to 10 miles a day but that most participants average about "5 to 6 miles a day," which typically meets program goals over the eight-week period. Ryan also provided contact details and said registration information will be posted on the City of Navasota website and the Grimes County AgriLife Facebook page.
Judge Joe Fouth read the formal proclamation text as prepared by extension staff and commissioners and county staff photographed signatories after the proclamation was read. The proclamation text, read into the record by Commissioner Chad Mallett, states that regular physical activity reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, colon cancer and other conditions and that Walk Across Texas uses group support to increase activity.
Organizers invited county employees and residents to sign up as team captains at the kickoff. Ryan left a sign-up sheet at the courthouse for commissioners and attendees who wanted to register early.
No formal budget appropriation or county cash sponsorship was discussed in connection with the proclamation during the meeting; the court’s action recorded in the minutes was the signing of the proclamation and the photograph taken with organizers.
Looking ahead: the local extension office will host the kickoff March 8 and collect registrations; Ryan said additional program information will be available through extension communications and the city website.
