County awards $116,897 quote to replace Burdett Park aquatic center lighting and PA system

VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. — Vanderburgh County commissioners on Jan. 28 awarded Melkay Electric Company the lowest quote to replace lighting, poles and the public-address system at Burdett Park's aquatic center, with an estimated cost of $116,897.
Parks staff described recurring failures of lights and speakers and said the existing equipment appears to date from the late 1970s. "These lights and poles are from, like, I we think 1979," Mr. Wathan said, noting some fixtures are no longer serviceable and replacement parts are unavailable.
Commissioners and staff said the new installation will use LED fixtures and modern poles and will restore a full PA system, addressing safety and operational concerns such as locating lost children and managing crowds during events. Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the award.
The contract covers replacement of poles, lighting fixtures and speakers. Parks staff said the work was deferred in the past but is now needed to avoid outages during the summer programming season.
