Board schedules superintendent evaluation and hears district updates on finance, enrollment and staffing

The board described last year’s use of a Google form for collecting evaluation input. The results, the board said, will be reviewed in a closed session with the superintendent and reported publicly afterward; board members discussed ensuring the evaluation measures the goals set in the prior year and whether new goals should be added.

In the superintendent report, the board heard a summary of recent state education finance developments and district operational updates. The board reported that the state’s formula provided an estimated 2.74 percent increase for the coming year and that certain employer responsibilities for Teachers Retirement Association (TRA) contributions and unemployment for support staff will be covered by the state rather than by district discretionary funds; those reimbursements were described as dedicated to those liabilities rather than available for general spending. Board members acknowledged ongoing concern about possible future reductions in special education transportation funding and larger special education funding reductions in later years.

The superintendent update also noted positive enrollment that exceeded preliminary expectations, a personnel hire — Stephanie Rueckmer returning as community education director — and celebration of the girls’ softball team winning a state championship and playing at the University of Minnesota stadium. The board was advised that negotiations and other committee work continue and that budget approval is scheduled for the next regular board meeting.
