Robert, a representative of the Portland Fish Exchange, told the Portland Fish Pier Authority that the exchange faces a critical shortfall and requested a $200,000 payment to cover immediate obligations.
Reading a letter to the board, Robert said the exchange has “nearly exhausted our $250,000 line of credit” after recent maintenance costs and payouts to vessels. He said the exchange withdrew $75,000 from the remaining $95,000 on the line of credit to make payments that are normally remitted to boats within 24 hours. Robert said the exchange’s checkbook balance was about $35,000 at the time of the letter and that, after paying boats in the auctions referenced, that balance could fall to “a little less than $20,000.”
Robert said auctions are resuming—he reported 11 boats returning and three expected to hail this week—but that the exchange lacks the funds to sustain operations until auction revenue stabilizes. “We have nearly exhausted our $250,000 line of credit... If we experience larger auctions next week, there's grave concern that we may not be able to fulfill our obligations to the boats,” he said.
Meredith said she was “supportive of this kind of support for the exchange” and moved to approve a $200,000 payment to alleviate the shortfall. The motion was seconded. Board members discussed seasonal variability in landings and the possibility of the exchange reducing staffing or other costs during lean periods to manage future risk.
The vote recorded yes from Mary (yes), Meredith (yes), John Arnold (yes), Brandon (yes), Tracy (yes) and the presiding officer, Rob (yes); the motion carried.
Board members did not specify a repayment schedule or a funding source in the meeting record. Robert said he anticipates more consistent landings in the coming weeks but requested immediate assistance to meet payroll and payouts.
