County hears plan to extend dark fiber into Wyatt Economic Development Area; no vote taken

County staff presented a proposal to use Wyatt Economic Development Area funds to build an initial leg of dark fiber south from Kelly Road toward New Road to reach Wyatt and, potentially, farther south.
Staff said the work would be done in partnership with Choice Light (presenter Regina Emerton) and would aim to connect county highway garages and add redundancy to the county's fiber network. "This gives us a first piece of fiber that we can start on this construction project south," staff said, noting the first connection target would be the highway garage in Woodland. The project could eventually extend as far south as Freeman, staff said.
No final action or vote was taken. Staff asked commissioners to hear the presentation and indicated a final request will be returned to the Redevelopment Commission for consideration at the March 18 meeting.
Commissioners asked operational questions about current connectivity at the highway garage (staff said it currently uses dial-up modem) and the broader broadband gap in that part of the county. Regina Emerton from Choice Light was present to take questions and to assist with final documentation for the next meeting.
