Harnett County to pursue EPA Brownfields grant to assess up to 18 sites

Harnett County staff on Tuesday asked the Board of Commissioners for permission to pursue a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields assessment grant, which would fund environmental assessments on multiple sites countywide.
"This grant would allow us to assess 15 to 18 different sites should we be awarded," Steven Barrington said. He said the application would be prepared in conjunction with Terracon and, if awarded, the grant could also fund some phase II investigations for about eight sites.
Barrington told commissioners the award is competitive and that the county would not be notified until May 2026 if successful. He also said the EPA award would be nonmatching: "It is not. A 100%. That is exactly correct." The county would therefore not be required to provide a local match for the assessment funding.
Staff asked the board to add the grant application to the consent agenda for next week so the application can be submitted and administrative requirements met. The board agreed to place the item on the consent agenda.
