Athletic staff and student athletes briefed the board on recent accomplishments across Octorara athletics, reporting mixed participation trends and several individual and team achievements this school year.
Athletic staff said fall participation rose to 268 student athletes this year from 229 the previous year, winter participation increased to 122 from 99, while spring participation dipped slightly to 194 from 202. The district highlighted multiple league honors and state qualifiers: boys basketball advanced to the state round, several athletes received LL League acknowledgements, and boys track captured the Section 3 championship.
Named athletes and accomplishments included Vincent Thaler (medaled at PIAA state competition in track events including the 300m and 110 hurdles), Sebastian Hess (state qualifier in discus), and Cody Lusby (state qualifier). The girls wrestling program also produced PIAA qualifiers and an individual place medal (Ella Tofford). Coach recognitions included a Section 3 Coach of the Year award for Coach Lambert (boys basketball) and Coach McGinnis earning Section 3 cross country coach of the year.
Student speakers at the meeting credited coaches, trainers and community support. Sebastian said emotional and technical coaching helped him improve from a league throw to a personal best at districts and states; Vincent Thaler thanked coaches and athletic trainer Steve Izzi and noted the team set nine new school records this year and received new equipment such as high‑jump mats.
Athletics leadership said they plan to increase mental‑health supports for athletes next year, including bringing outside presenters to provide training to coaches on supporting student emotional needs during seasons.
No formal board action was taken; the report was informational and the board publicly acknowledged athletes and coaches for the season’s achievements.
