The Monticello Public School District school board unanimously approved a change to Policy 7-10—extracurricular transportation—expanding the policy’s operational definition of “employees” to include certain volunteers.
Rob De Anakar, the district’s director of human resources, presented the second reading and explained the change was proposed after an activity advisor requested clarification of who may serve as drivers or supervisors for extracurricular trips. The new clause reads, in part: “For the purposes of this policy, employees shall include volunteers who, prior to beginning service to the school district, have satisfied the appropriate background screening and vetting requirements.”
The policy change authorizes volunteers who complete the district’s required background checks and vetting to serve in roles that were previously limited strictly to paid employees for transportation purposes. The board discussed the change as a targeted clarification to ensure volunteers who meet vetting requirements may legally and administratively be used for extracurricular transportation.
Moved by Casey Ruth and seconded by Jeff Hegley, the motion passed 6-0.
Staff said the revision would be incorporated into the district policy manual and referenced in communications to activity advisors and volunteers.
