The New York State Senate adopted Resolution 1099 on Wednesday mourning the death of former U.S. Representative Charles B. Rangel and honoring his long record of public service.
Sen. Cordell Cleare (read as submitted on the floor) introduced the resolution and described Rangel as “the lion of Lenox Avenue,” noting his decades-long service in Congress and his work on veterans and affordable housing. Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Senate majority leader, and other members offered tributes that recalled Rangel’s Korean War service, his role in founding the Congressional Black Caucus, his chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee and his decades of advocacy for Harlem.
Speakers emphasized Rangel’s mentoring of younger public officials and civic leaders from across New York. Several senators who grew up or worked in communities Rangel represented described personal memories and the influence he had on their careers. Members of the public and members of veterans groups who were in the gallery received recognition from the chamber.
After the remarks the presiding officer put the resolution to a voice vote. The clerk recorded the resolution as adopted by the Senate.
