School board approves Monticello High School nine-day music tour to Europe; students to pay approximately $4,474

The Monticello Public School District school board voted unanimously to approve a proposed nine-day Monticello High School music trip to Europe, a staff presentation said. The trip is tentatively scheduled around spring break in 2027 and would visit Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.
Dr. Lehi Molin, who identified themself as the high school choir teacher, presented the proposal and answered questions about itinerary, safety and cost. Dr. Molin said the tour would include seven hotel nights, a full-time tour director, coach bus transportation for scheduled activities, breakfast and dinner, and 24-hour emergency support; a travel-protection plan was recommended. The presenter said adults who register would pay $5,204; the stated cost for students is $4,474.
Dr. Molin told the board the trip’s planning is tentative until registrations are finalized and EF Educational Tours finalizes itineraries about 90 days before travel. The presenter said room assignments would be made by the teacher and that background checks would be required for all adults and chaperones who are school employees. Fundraising options listed in the presentation included pizza sales, butter braids, Charleston Wrap and grocery bagging; the presenter noted EF’s personal fundraising pages for students.
Board members asked about performance and credit opportunities, daily travel times, participation eligibility and whether middle-school students could be included in future iterations. Dr. Molin said the trip is intended as an educational experience (not a guaranteed performance tour), noted possible college-credit or professional development opportunities for teachers, and said typical intra-country bus legs would often be two to three hours, with substantial walking during city tours.
Moved by Melissa Curtis and seconded by Casey Root, the motion to approve the trip passed 6-0.
