Albany County secures technical assistance for bike-ped study near county airport

The Albany County Legislature authorized an agreement with the Capital Region Transportation Council (CRTC) to provide technical assistance for a complete streets/active transportation study focused on bike and pedestrian connectivity near the Albany County Airport and along Castle Road.
County staff said the legislature previously approved $50,000 toward the study and the Department of Public Works will contribute an additional $15,000 from its CRTC budget, for a combined $65,000. The study will include a bike-ped assessment in the Town of Colonie near the county airport, evaluate gaps in bike and pedestrian access to Route 7, and examine the feasibility and high-level cost estimates for sidewalks on Castle Road.
Staff said the study will consider continuity of existing sidewalks and potential bike/ped routes to connect to the regional bike path network; narrow right-of-way and utility pole locations may limit opportunities for dedicated bike lanes in certain segments. The county also said it will coordinate with the Town of Colonie planning department as the project moves beyond the initial agreement phase. The legislature approved the agreement by voice vote.
Officials noted the study’s cost estimates and findings can be used to support future grant applications to fund construction work.
