Pilar Whitlock, a Girl Scout in Troop 4960, told the council her troop partnered with Keep Flower Mound Beautiful after observing vape devices and batteries discarded in litter and at pickup events. “Many people in our community are unaware of how to recycle electronic devices,” she said, noting lithium batteries can leak or ignite and that some smoke shops do not accept used devices or prominently advertise recycling.
Councilmembers responded by asking staff to bring a future agenda item to review the town’s hazardous‑waste program and consider outreach or regulatory options related to e‑cigarette/device recycling. A councilmember said it had been about three and a half years since the town last did a deep dive into hazardous waste; another councilmember asked staff to explore whether the town could expand beyond the existing Republic Services program and consider requiring smoke shops to display recycling information.
The council asked staff to return with options and possible agenda dates; staff said the matter could be scheduled for discussion at an upcoming council meeting or work session in June or July.
