Parent urges schools to teach about antisemitic stereotypes, warns against equating criticism of Israel with antisemitism

A written public comment presented to the Albany City School District Board of Education expressed concern about bullying of Jewish students in district schools and urged education about harmful stereotypes, while warning against conflating criticism of Israel with antisemitism.

The letter, submitted by Miriam Tell and read into the record by the board, said: "As a Jewish parent, I'm saddened to hear that Jewish students are experiencing bullying in our schools. Education about the dangerous stereotypes out there about Jews would be useful." The letter also said, "I stand unequivocally against conflating criticism of Israel and antisemitism. That they are two entirely different things and to say otherwise is offensive to the deeply Jewish principles of justice, introspection and open debate."

The board president noted the district accepts public comment in person, by voicemail and via a web form, and that the district posts public comment procedures on its website. No in-person speakers addressed the board that evening; one written comment had been received by mail.

Board members thanked the commenter; no immediate policy action or formal board response to the letter was recorded in the meeting minutes or audio excerpt. The board moved on to routine consent items and other business.
