District says demolition permits pending after Mississippi Archives review of three buildings

District legal counsel told the Jackson Public School Board the district has filed required notices after the board previously approved demolition of three vacant buildings and that the Mississippi Department of Archives and History will consider whether to designate them historic.
Attorney Harris said the district filed the notices of intent required by the state agency and met with agency staff to discuss possible historic designations for the three buildings (French, Baker and Woodville Heights). Harris said the state agency will present the matter to its board at its next quarterly meeting; following that presentation there will be a 30-day public comment period. If the agency’s process proceeds as expected, the district anticipates demolition permits after the April quarterly meeting.
District staff said the three buildings are among a group of properties the administration is working to repurpose or dispose of and that the outcome of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History review will determine timing for any demolition. No demolition permits were reported as issued at the special meeting.
