Lancaster ISD board authorizes pay for staff during January emergency school closure

The Lancaster Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution to provide wage continuance for employees during an emergency school closing in January 2025.
Board legal counsel presented a resolution consistent with board policy DEA(Local) that authorizes continuation of wages for full‑time and part‑time employees who were instructed not to report during the emergency closure. Exempt employees will continue to receive their regular wages. The resolution also authorizes payment at two times the regular hourly rate for essential nonexempt maintenance workers who were directed to work during the closure to clear ice, check buildings for water leaks and service HVAC equipment.
Trustee Woodfield commented in support of the resolution, saying employees should not be penalized for weather-related closures and that staff members who performed emergency work should be compensated. Trustee Whitfield and others spoke in favor; the board approved the resolution by unanimous vote.
Why this matters: The resolution ensures hourly workers who were unable to report because of an emergency are not penalized and that essential workers who performed emergency tasks are compensated at an overtime rate.
