Board hears safety and security update; visitor ID system and school vestibules discussed

District staff delivered the safety and security committee report to the Montville Township Board of Education, outlining recent staffing changes, facility upgrades and planned technology to manage visitors.
The report said a special law enforcement officer assigned as a school liaison began on Feb. 19 and will rotate among the district's five elementary schools on a periodic or as-needed basis. The district already maintains other security presences including SROs (school resource officers) and routine police patrols, the report noted.
Staff said vestibule projects are nearing completion at Valley View and scheduled for completion over the summer at the high school, Woodmont, Hilldale and William Mason. The committee also discussed evaluating a visitor ID system that would scan a driver's license and verify approval for entry; the system is being reviewed and staff said it will be rolled out after evaluation and issue resolution.
The safety report included plans for additional training exercises and tabletop sessions with police to prepare administrators for emergency scenarios. The report also touched on other ongoing safety tools discussed elsewhere in the meeting, including Gaggle and GoGuardian monitoring platforms that district communications staff have been messaging to families.
No formal board action was requested during the safety report; board members thanked staff and acknowledged the increased security presence in and around schools.
