The Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce on March 4 presented an annual impact report to the City Council, outlining a multi-year effort called Upskill Chino Valley that the chamber says has secured state and county funds to support local workforce development.
Zeb Weldon, president of the Chino Valley Chamber, told the council the chamber has helped secure about $700,000 in state funds to provide direct training support to local employers and has placed more than 435 people into jobs. He said the chamber's work includes partnerships with the San Bernardino County Workforce Development Board, Chaffey College and local employers, and that program participants include people with justice-involved backgrounds.
"In February, we've actually secured about $700,000 that we've given to businesses or that we will be giving to businesses to help train their employees so that they can get more skills and earn higher wages," Weldon said. He described additional chamber activities such as supplier events, roundtables with law enforcement on retail and cargo theft, entrepreneurship programming for youth, and partnerships to connect local businesses with opportunities from utilities and energy projects.
Weldon said the chamber has placed more than 400 people and cited 5,212 participants in job fairs and workforce programs (a participation figure he said covers multiple years). He also described case studies in which the chamber provided direct grant funding to local firms to support hiring and training.
Council members thanked the chamber for its engagement and noted city staff collaboration on economic development and entrepreneurship initiatives. The presentation concluded without action items; it was an informational report to the council.
