Council approves $57,200 professional design agreement for Abilene Lift Station

City staff presented a professional-services agreement with SEH for design work on the Abilene Lift Station and asked the council to authorize the agreement and signatory authority.
Staff said the existing lift station, located on Abilene near the southern part of the community between two driveways, is undersized for proposed southern development and that relocation north along Abilene would allow a prefabricated wet well and prepackaged pumping unit to be placed with improved gravity mains. Staff described the project as a proactive step to avoid sewer backups when new development is connected: “If we don't do this, then we will, potentially have the risk of backing up a sewer line,” a city staff member said.
Clint, a city staff member, told the council the design agreement fee is $57,200 and that the construction estimate for the new lift station and related work is currently in the $600,000 to $700,000 range. He said the money for the design agreement will come from sewer reserves and that the city expects to replenish reserves over time as sewer loan payments decline.
Council voted to approve the professional design agreement with SEH for the Abilene Lift Station in the amount of $57,200 and authorized the mayor or city administrator to sign. The motion carried.
Staff said the project will replace a force main with a gravity main where feasible, add manholes and a new lift station location designed to handle future development south of Fourth Street. A later item for construction funding will follow the design phase.
