The Douglas Unified School District governing board approved multiple personnel items, including certified and classified resignations and retirements, and voted on a request to release a certified teacher's contract.
Board members emphasized that their approvals of retirement items were limited to accepting retirement dates and would not address other statements in employees' letters. "The only thing that the board is going to accept tonight is the retirement date," the board president said before the vote.
The board approved the certified resignations and retirements on a roll-call vote. The board also approved classified resignations and retirements in a separate action.
After convening in executive session, the board considered a request from a certified teacher, identified in the public record as Eddie J. Deese Jr., RBMS, to be released from his 2024'25 contract. Superintendent Samaniego recommended accepting the resignation, charging liquidated damages of $1,500 and designating the employee as not eligible for rehire. A board member moved to follow the superintendent's recommendation; the motion was seconded by Mr. Smith and approved on roll call.
Board members said they would address service and recognition for long-term employees at a later date, while noting the board's immediate action was limited to the items presented on the agenda.
Votes on personnel items were recorded by roll call and approved unanimously where noted on the record.
