Students present ‘Green New Deal for Wake County Schools’ and say board largely has not engaged

A group of Wake County high school students presented a student‑authored “Green New Deal for Wake County Schools” resolution, saying it includes SMART goals — specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time‑bound actions — to reduce energy costs, improve air quality, expand climate education and prepare schools for extreme weather.

The student speaker described suggested actions that include switching to LED lighting, upgrading HVAC systems to improve air quality and prevent overheating-related early releases, investing in solar energy for long‑term savings and expanding climate education to prepare students for green jobs. The presentation also proposed developing a district climate disaster plan for more frequent severe-weather events.

The student speaker said organizers had repeatedly attempted to engage the board: “Many board members have not responded, and the few who initially replied ignored our follow‑up emails requesting meetings. Even the board members who agreed to meet did not show up to our scheduled virtual meetings. Only one board member, Mr. Sam Hershey, has actually met with us virtually and he has engaged in discussion about potential edits to help get the resolution passed.” The student concluded: “We have shown up. We have done the research. We have put forward real solutions that benefit students, staff, and the district as a whole. Yet the school board has failed to engage with us.”

The presentation was given during public comment; students said they will continue outreach and will email their resolution to the board. The board did not take formal action on the student proposal during the meeting.
