The Kernersville Board of Aldermen unanimously approved an amendment to the town’s vehicle policy on March 4 to allow certain Parks and Recreation supervisory staff to take town vehicles home.
Town staff explained the change would permit the Parks and Recreation maintenance superintendent to take a vehicle home on a full-time basis (previously allowed only for special events) and authorize the parks and recreation grounds supervisor and facilities supervisor to take their vehicles home. The parks and recreation horticulture supervisor would have take-home privileges when on monthly on-call duty.
Staff noted the positions are called back regularly — in some cases daily for the superintendent and several times a week for other supervisors — due to increased field and facility use. The presenter cited a recent late-night call-back as an example of why ready access to vehicles is operationally important. The change aligns the Parks and Recreation supervisors with similar take-home privileges already afforded to certain public services supervisors.
Alderman Apple moved approval and an alderman seconded the motion; the board voted unanimously to adopt the amendment.
Why it matters: the change is intended to improve operational responsiveness for park maintenance and event support and formalizes an existing need for frequent call-backs.
