Mayor announces Layton Construction selected to rebuild Alta Canyon Sports Center; $9M-plus funding gap remains

Mayor Monica Zolzanski told the Sandy City Council on March 4 that Layton Construction was selected as the contractor to rebuild the Alta Canyon Sports Center.
The mayor said Layton Construction, a local firm with experience on high-profile recreation and civic projects, was chosen following a procurement process and evaluation of competitive bids. Projects cited in the mayor's remarks as part of the contractor's portfolio included the Provo Recreation Center, Draper County Rec Center, the new University of Utah baseball stadium work and other regional recreation facilities.
Zolzanski said the administration now is working to create funding sources to close a remaining shortfall of more than $9 million for the full vision of the rebuild and that the objective is to achieve the rebuild without raising property taxes. "Layton Construction is the contractor selected for the rebuild of Alta Canyon Sports Center, and we ... continue to work on creating funding sources to fill the $9,000,000-plus gap," the mayor said.
The announcement was informational; the council did not record additional budget action at the March 4 meeting. City staff said the funding gap and financing plan will be discussed in an upcoming budget preview workshop and future council briefings.
