Sandy City Council adopts social media policy after brief discussion

The Sandy City Council unanimously adopted a council social media policy at its March 4 meeting.
Liz Theriault of the council office presented revisions to the draft policy, saying the changes included language to allow council members to publicize committee work and an added section describing current live-streaming practices. "I did add in a whole ... new section about live streaming, and it really just kind of dictates what we are currently doing," Theriault said during the presentation.
Council member Ryan Meekum moved to adopt Resolution 25-06-C (the council social media policy), and Council member Cindy Sharkey seconded. The motion carried on a 6-0 roll call.
The policy as adopted covers council members' use of official and personal social media when acting in a council capacity, includes guidance for representing committee work, and references the city's current procedures for remote participation and how residents can view meetings via Zoom or the city's video archives. Theriault noted further technical integration for live-streaming (for example, comment moderation and platform choice) would require additional research before new streaming practices were implemented.
No public comment was received on the item. The council's approval authorizes staff to post the policy and implement the adopted guidance for council social media use and committee communications.
