San Benito commissioners reject struck-off property bid, authorize legal counsel to proceed

The City of San Benito Commission on March 4 voted to reject a bid received at a tax resale and then granted authority for city legal counsel to pursue coordination with other local taxing jurisdictions.

The action followed an executive session in which commissioners discussed a property struck off to Cameron County after a tax resale conducted Nov. 5, 2024. The commission voted first to reject the bid related to the Hollingsworth Subdivision tax resale (tax account number 588600000004000) and then to authorize counsel to take next steps as discussed in executive session.

Commissioner Goodman moved to reject the current bid; Commissioner Morales seconded. The commission voice-voted “Aye” with no recorded nays and the motion passed. Later the commission voted to authorize city legal counsel to proceed as discussed; that motion was made by Commissioner Gohmert and seconded by Commissioner Morales and passed on a voice vote.

City staff identified the parcel using the Hollingsworth Subdivision legal description and the Cameron County tax account cited during the meeting. Commissioners said the motions implemented direction that had been discussed behind closed doors in executive session; the commission did not read additional terms or a purchase price into the public record during the open meeting.

The commission directed staff and counsel to follow up with county officials and other taxing entities, and City representatives said they would report back to the commission with next steps. No timetable for further action was given during the meeting.

The items were taken after the commission reopened the regular meeting from executive session; commissioners clarified recording and agenda-numbering confusion on the floor before final motions were recorded.
