House approves $20 million amendment to begin Campbell County high school project

The Wyoming House on March 4 adopted an amendment to Senate File 34 that adds $20 million to begin demolition, site work and initial construction steps on a Campbell County high school project.

Representative Clauston, sponsor of the amendment, told the chamber the $20 million would secure “the minimum funding needed to begin the initial phases of demolition and construction” and avoid a six‑ to eight‑month delay if the funds were not released. Representative Yen described sewage leaks at the school and called the request “an emergency.”

Representative Claussen said the total project is roughly $144 million and that the Senate had already appropriated funds for a bus barn and design and planning; the amendment was intended to allow construction to begin. House members adopted the $20 million amendment by roll call, 35 aye, 26 no, 1 excused. The bill then passed third reading by a separate roll-call vote of 38 aye, 23 no, 1 excused.

Opponents warned about spending priorities and asked for clarity on what the amendment covered. Representative Harshman asked whether the money would cover the bus barn, the high school, or planning; Clauston and Yen said the amendment would advance both demolition and site planning to prevent higher future costs.

With the amendment adopted, the House moved the bill forward. The measure will continue through the legislative process for final budget alignment and implementation steps.
