Trevor Tete of the MOCAN Regional Council described a $100,000 federal Safe Streets for All planning grant the council received to produce a regional safety action plan. MOCAN is asking counties in its service area to split the required 20% match (roughly $20,000) and proposed an equal share of about $3,400 per county to cover the match and gain access to the plan and project nomination process.
Tete said the planning work will form local stakeholder committees, assemble crash and safety data with MoDOT, and identify candidate roadway safety projects. Once a project is identified in a Safe Streets plan, it becomes eligible for competitive implementation grants — some of which can fund large infrastructure projects (examples cited up to $25 million). MOCAN asked for a county commitment by the end of the week but said late commitments could still be accepted; the practical timeline is to have the regional plan drafted by the end of the year so projects can be eligible in the next Safe Streets notice of funding opportunity expected in March.
Commissioners asked staff to check budget availability and confer with city and road‑bridge leadership; the county did not commit during the meeting but indicated it would consider the request and return with an answer.
