Civic Design Review Chair Abby Schneier reported to the full commission that the Civic Design Review (CDR) Committee met Feb. 24 to review the Rachel Sullivan Park project at 11th and Natoma and that the committee approved the project’s Phase materials and design revisions.
Schneier said the project team involved artist Jennifer Wolford early in the park’s design, enabling coordination between an art fence facing Eleventh Street and the park’s multiuse court paving, which will include artist work rather than the previously proposed sunburst placeholder. The committee noted practical changes resulting from cost and constructability reviews: some seat walls will be replaced with benches due to budget considerations, and tamper‑proof hardware and anti‑graffiti measures will be specified for fences and other site features. The project team also showed a complete landscape plan and described a second egress on Natoma Street.
Members praised the project as an example of early artist engagement producing integrated results, and the committee encouraged continued coordination among the artist, project team and maintenance staff as the park moves toward construction.
