County committee approves $75,000 DATCP staffing grant for Land Conservation Department

Milwaukee County’s parks committee voted to authorize staff to apply for, accept and administer a 2026 staffing grant from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) to support the Land Conservation Department.
Jack Souda, senior environmental engineer with Milwaukee County Environmental Services, described the grant as an annual award available to Wisconsin counties that have an approved land and water resource management plan. He told the committee the grant typically runs about $75,000, requires no local match and is intended “to help cover the costs of staff salaries, training, travel, and office expenses.”
Supervisor O'Connor moved approval and the committee recorded a roll-call vote with seven ayes and no noes. The clerk read the vote as: Supervisor Taylor; Supervisor Martin; Supervisor Coggs Jones; Supervisor Martinez; Supervisor Ekblad; Supervisor O'Connor; and Chairman Wasserman — all voting aye.
Why it matters: the grant supplements county staff capacity for land and water conservation work without requiring local matching funds, and the county has received similar DATCP staffing grants annually for more than a decade.
The item will also go to the committee on finance for referral and appropriation, per standard county procedure.
