County accepts $4,000 from Best Friends; staff reports training, partnerships and pet adoption budget changes

Kaufman County Commissioners Court accepted a $4,000 donation from Best Friends to reimburse registration and travel expenses for two county employees who attended the Best Friends national conference.

Pam, a county staff member who attended the conference with the county manager, described intensive training sessions and networking that led to new local connections with groups offering support for pet programs. Pam cited contacts with Operation Kindness, spay-and-neuter clinics and a group called “Cuddly,” and said she spoke with an American Airlines representative about a program in which flight attendants help transport animals between states.

Pam said the conference was “a once in a lifetime experience” and that the donation covered the county’s travel costs: “At no cost to the county,” she said on the record.

During the same meeting, county finance staff said they had established a pet adoption center budget for FY24-5 (an internal fund label in the packet) to better reflect expenses that have flowed through county accounts. The county auditor said the FY24 cleanup and the FY25 line-item adjustments include safety nets to prevent departments from overspending and that a line-by-line report will be provided to the commissioners in April.

The donation acceptance and the budget adjustments were approved by voice vote.
