The committee asked staff to revise policy wording so the process on the website, forms and draft policy match and so families understand the difference between a registration receipt and a confirmed placement.
The committee also reviewed preschool enrollment procedures. The district’s website and forms state that preschool admission is by lottery; committee members cited a posted internal lottery date of March 7, 2025, and noted that parents will be notified of acceptance or wait-list status by March 14, 2025 (the transcript contained a typographical rendering of that date). Staff said preschool tuition is waived for children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals, and that special-education placements (IEP-based placements) are handled through the special-education process and are not covered by the general preschool application.
Members discussed how returning students are treated. Staff noted a local rule that returning students may be guaranteed placement in a grade (for example, a referenced fourth-grade placement) only if the family completes required materials by a specified deadline (the transcript referenced 02/28/2025 for a returning-student guarantee in a specific case). The committee asked staff to incorporate clear timelines and a short explanation in policy so families know when to expect final confirmation and what deadlines affect guarantees.
Staff asked the committee whether the registration confirmation language should say families will “receive communication from the district” rather than promise instantaneous confirmation; members supported describing the timing more generally and adding that confirmations typically occur in the summer once placements are finalized.
The committee asked staff to clean up and consolidate registration and preschool language and to circulate a revised draft before the next meeting so members can focus on outstanding issues rather than line-by-line drafting.
