A Mississippi Senate committee gave consent to Senate Nomination 61 on a voice vote to appoint retired Major General William Chrisler to the Mississippi State Veterans Affairs Board to complete the term of Colonel Allen McDaniel.
Chrisler, introduced to the committee at the hearing, described a 36-year career in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard and said he now works for the National Guard Association. “I’ve pretty much grown up with veterans,” he said, and added that he wants to continue serving veterans in a civilian capacity.
In remarks to the committee, Chrisler cited routine but consequential services the board provides, including helping families obtain DD Form 214 documents needed for military funerals and assisting veterans with disability claims or nursing-home placement. “One of the things that we see every day in the office is family members come up looking for a DD 214,” he said. “Might seem like a really small thing, but to that family whose service member has passed away, the family is trying to ensure that they have a military funeral.”
Committee staff member Tanner Robinson reported a peer review and financial-interest check and told the chair there were no red flags. The chair asked for a motion and took a voice vote; the chair announced, “The ayes have it.” The transcript does not include a roll-call tally or the names of a mover and seconder.
Chrisler said he is interested in “looking at a number of the things that Veterans Affairs does” and mentioned particular attention to veterans’ access to benefits and long-term care. The committee advanced the nomination by consent; the transcript does not specify any requested conditions, reporting requirements or an effective appointment date.
